NEW YORK — An FDNY firefighter was seriously injured while trying to free the occupants of a car after a two-vehicle crash in Midtown Sunday, officials said.

Firefighters said they responded to the wreck at W. 42nd St. and 11th Ave. about 3:20 p.m. where a BMW SUV was atop a Volvo sedan.

Firefighter Ryan Warnock, along with his colleagues from nearby Rescue 1, began to brace and stabilize the BMW to safely get out the people stuck inside the car, officials said.

But a driver in one of the vehicles hit the gas, causing one of the cars to shift and pin Warnock’s leg in the process. His colleagues quickly worked to free him from under the car and rushed him to Bellevue hospital with severe injuries to his leg. He was listed in serious but stable condition.

In a statement, Acting Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh commended the quick-thinking firefighters.

“Every day, members of our great Department put their lives on the line to protect the residents of our great city,” Kavanagh said. “We are grateful for the quick response of our members, whose fast reactions helped remove firefighter Warnock quickly and ensured he got the medical attention he needed.”

There were no other injuries.
