LOS ANGELES (AP) — The U.S. Forest Service announced Friday it's taking emergency action to save giant sequoias by speeding up projects that could start within weeks to clear underbrush to protect the world’s largest trees from the increasing threat of wildfires.

The move to bypass some environmental review could cut years off the normal approval process required to cut smaller trees in national forests and use intentionally lit low-intensity fires to reduce dense brush that has helped fuel raging wildfires that have killed up to 20% of all large sequoias over the past two years.

The U.S. men's 4x100 relay lineup of Christian Coleman, Noah Lyles, Elijah Hall and Marvin Bracy cruised into the final with the fastest qualifying time at world championships. It was cause for a mini-celebration as anchor leg Bracy pretended the baton was a can, popped the top and took a giant gulp. They now have a chance for atonement after a faulty exchange at the Tokyo Games kept the team out of the final. The U.S. women also had the top time in qualifying to advance. They will be chasing the Jamaicans.

A brush fire in Mariposa County, California, quickly exploded in size to 1,300 acres Friday afternoon, prompting authorities to expand evacuation zones.

Jarren Duran and the Red Sox will try to shake off what happened at Fenway Park, where Toronto went on a run rampage that included an inside-the-park grand slam thanks to Duran’s misplay and negligence. The Blue Jays surpassed the franchise record for runs in a game when they scored their 25th in the fifth inning Friday night. Raimel Tapia’s inside-the-parker accounted for four unusual runs. Tapia hit a fly to center in the third inning, and Duran took a couple steps back, then a couple in, then put up his hands in confusion. Fans groaned when the ball landed on the warning track behind him. Duran then walked slowly toward the ball while left fielder Alex Verdugo raced over to pick it up.

BLAINE, Minn. — PGA Tour officials moved Saturday's final tee times up to 8:50 a.m. because of forecasted severe weather on the plain in Blaine, which gives 3M Open second-round leader Scott Piercy four fewer hours to contemplate his three-shot advantage.

Two men convicted of killing a pair of California teenagers who vanished nearly six years ago have been sentenced to life in prison without the chance of parole. Chandale Shannon and Jesus Campos were sentenced Friday in Yolo County by a judge who called the crimes evil. They were among four men who were arrested for the 2017 killings of 16-year-old Enrique Rios and his friend, 17-year-old Elijah Moore. Prosecutors said the killings were sparked by revenge after Moore stole some marijuana from some of the men. The teens were killed in secluded areas near Sacramento. Their bodies were never found.

LONDON — In the final hours before Tory lawmakers chose the two candidates who will face off to become next British prime minister, anxious supporters of Foreign Secretary Liz Truss were engaged in a desperate operation to scare up votes.

Former Braves and Cubs outfielder Dwight Smith has died at the age of 58. The Braves announced that Smith died Fridayt on congestive heart and lung failure. Smith was a runner-up for NL rookie of the year with the Cubs and went on to play on Atlanta’s World Series-winning team in 1995. Smith played in the big leagues for eight years, also splitting a season between the California Angels and Baltimore Orioles. His son, Dwight Jr., has also spent time in majors, most recently with Baltimore in 2020.

The time is now for the Giants to make a couple of trades to improve their team ahead of the final two months of the season.

PITTSBURGH — It’s long been assumed that the Pirates would be busy at (and around) the MLB trade deadline. How they kicked things off, however, was a little unexpected, sending Daniel Vogelbach to the New York Mets on Friday in exchange for major league pitcher Colin Holderman.

MINNEAPOLIS — Tony Oliva is in post-election hubris. He's spent the summer preparing for a moment he didn't believe would happen.

It looks like the legal battle between exes Amber Heard and Johnny Depp has just entered a new chapter.

A now-shuttered Sacramento-area private school for special needs students and three of its former employees have been indicted in connection with the 2018 death of a 13-year-old autistic boy, who was held in a face-down restraint for nearly two hours, authorities said.

MINNEAPOLIS — With their offseason trade for Rudy Gobert, a massive extension for franchise cornerstone Karl-Anthony Towns and the projected continued ascendance of Anthony Edwards, the Timberwolves could be poised for big things in years to come.

DETROIT — The Rocket is almost ready for liftoff.
