Tamaqua Fire Department Entirely Motorized

The fire department of Tamaqua, Pa., of which I. H. Bright is chief, is now entirely motorized. The department consists of four companies, the American Hose Co., Citizen’s Fire Co., South Ward Fire Co. and East End Fire Co. The apparatus includes one American-LaFrance 75-foot aerial, one straight chemical car, three combination chemical and hose cars, one Boyd 750-gallon triple combination car and one Seagrave 750-gallon triple combination car. All of the old horse-drawn and hand apparatus have now been disposed of, according to Chief Bright, and the department has 8.000 feet of 254-inch double-jacket fire hose in good condition. There is a Gamewell telegraphic fire alarm system, a whistle blowing the number of the box when an alarm is pulled.

The department recently fought an incendiary fire in a three-story building, 25-foot front and 150 feet deep and Chief Bright writes the department was on the job before the fire had gained much headway and brought it under control in less than an hour, with little damage by fire or water. The building was occupied by a pool and billiard parlor owned by Greeks, who, it was charged, had set fires in three different places in the structure.
