The Sherman Board of Selectman authorized an appropriation of $40,000 from American Rescue Funds in order to purchase rescue equipment for the Sherman Volunteer Fire Department at the board’s Aug. 29 meeting.

SHERMAN - The Sherman selectmen board recently approved American Rescue Plan Act funds to purchase rescue equipment for the town’s volunteer fire department and for legal work for the repair of The Sherman School.

At their meeting, the board unanimously authorized $40,000 from the federal COVID-19 relief funds known as ARPA to purchase a new cutter, spreader and ram for the Sherman Volunteer Fire Department.

“It just makes our volunteer fire department stronger and gives them more tools to act, especially in motor vehicle emergencies,” said Sherman First Selectman Don Lowe, “and we’re very pleased that it passed. We’re always pleased with the work they do and this makes them more able to do their good work.”

Another $7,500 was approved for school repairs.

Lowe said the school has experienced issues within its plumbing system, roof leaks, and problems with its heating, ventilation and air conditioning.

“We’re looking for a complete and comprehensive repair of the school,” he said. “I and my entire board are interested in seeing the school become whole again in a repaired and functioning building.”

Lowe said the Sherman Building Committee, a newly formed committee at the school, is going to present a plan to repair the school to the town.

“It’s a very, very good group … and I look forward to hearing from them,” he said.

To date, Sherman Business Manager Liz Cipolla-LaVia said the town has received about $720,000 in ARPA funds. She said they anticipate receiving around $350,000 in ARPA funding some time in the near future.”

In total, the town will receive about $1 million in ARPA funds.

“So far, we have earmarked $216, 945.84 for various purchases and projects,” Cipolla-LaVia said.

Out of that amount, the town has set aside $19,945.84 for the COVID-19 Clinic Share with New Fairfield; $140,000 for the purchase of 24 Tri Band radios for the Sherman Volunteer Fire Department; $9,500 for the heat pump and air conditioning unit for the Emergency Services Facility; $40,000 to purchase hydraulic tools for the Sherman Volunteer Fire Department; and $7,500 for legal and request for proposals (RFP) expenses for the repair of The Sherman School.
