At least two people have died after a fire at an apartment complex in Winston-Salem.

Winston-Salem Fire Department crews said the fire occurred Friday at Bethabara Gardens on Hickory Knoll Drive. Fire crews were dispatched at 1:25 a.m. Friday.

Officials said eight units were damaged in the fire and now are unlivable. Helmet video from fire crews revealed heavy flames and smoke as they first arrived at the scene.

Patrick Grubbs, a battalion chief with the fire department, confirmed that two people died and four others were injured.

Grubbs said he wasn't sure if the two deaths were from the same residence but said that it was one apartment building that was destroyed.

“The fire was across the entire front of the structure and was also coming out the back and through the roof at the time of arrival. Our crews immediately went into action, they made a couple of rescues, went in through the windows and brought some people out through the windows to make rescues,” Grubbs said.

Officials have not released the victims' names or how the fire started.
