The provincial firefighting consortium brigade in Malaga has announced that it is recruiting 100 more firefighters as well as giving permanent posts to 222 who have been on temporary contracts.

The president of the Diputación provincial authority, Francisco Salado, said this is part of the commitment to improving the service and making it a benchmark in Spain. The vehicle fleet and technical equipment will also be renewed as part of this plan, which includes building new fire stations and extending and modernising the existing ones.

At present the consortium has five main fire stations (Antequera, Coín, Ronda, Vélez-Malaga and Estepona) with smaller bases in Algatocín, Alhaurín de la Torre, Archidona, Campillos, Colmenar, Manilva, Nerja, Periana and Rincón de la Victoria.

Since 2019 the Diputación has invested 26.6 million euros in the fire service, including 15.2 million on new vehicles and 8.5 million on improving or building fire stations and bases. This includes funding assigned for new projects such as the one in Rincón de la Victoria, where the works are due to begin soon and Álora-Pizarra, for which the contract is to be put to tender.

The provincial authority has also allocated 2.9 million euros for protective clothing and equipment including suits, helmets, boots and gloves, five rescue teams to respond to traffic accidents, new computer software and digitalising the radiocommunications system.
